THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE SAMI AND THE REINDEER

Spread the love

The legend says that there is an old agreement between the Sami people and the reindeer. This agreement mas made when the Sami people started taming the reindeer, and not just follow and hunt wild reindeers.

The reindeer said: “We will agree on you humans to use us as a way of surviving on two conditions:

1. Protects us from predators like the wolf and lynx.

2. When you slaughter us, you should use everything. Every single thing. Don´t let anything go to waste.

And that is how the Sami and the reindeer started working together. The reindeer hearder protects the reindeer from dangerous predators in nature, and when we kill a reindeer we use all of it.

Here are some few examples: We use the skin for clothing, antlers for making kniveshandles and giella (object for lasso), meat for food, blood for making pancakes, sausage and so on, intestines for making sausage, head for food, eyes for food, tongue for food, legs for food, back for food, hoofes for making glue and music intstruments, tendons of the back and legs for use as thread. We use absolutely everything.

But unfortunately, the old way of slaughering the reindeer by saving everything, is not the only way anymore….
